Do Notaries Do Same-Day Service?
A few hours before her surgery, a woman called me from her hospital bed. She had booked another notary earlier that day, but they never showed up and never called to explain why. She was scared, she was out of time, and she needed her documents notarized before she went under anesthesia.
We got there before her surgery.
That call is one of the reasons I built my business around same-day availability. So when people ask me, "Do notaries do same-day service?" — my honest answer is: some do, some don't, and it's worth knowing the difference before you're the one calling around in a panic.
Same-Day Notary Service Isn't Guaranteed Industry-Wide
Not every notary offers same-day appointments, and that surprises a lot of people. Some notaries only work by appointment days in advance. Some only take walk-ins during specific hours. Some will do same-day work, but they'll charge a rush fee for the privilege.
There's no industry standard here. It really comes down to how each notary runs their business.
I built mine to say yes as often as I possibly can — including same-day, including short notice, including situations that come with extra moving pieces like printing documents in advance or coordinating a courier.
How I Actually Determine Same-Day Availability
When someone calls or texts asking if I can come today, I ask two questions:
What time are you thinking?
What's the meeting address?
Between those answers and what's already on my calendar, I can usually tell within a minute or two whether I can make it work.
I also keep my booking page updated in real time, so people don't have to call at all if they don't want to. You can look at my live availability, find a time that works, and confirm your own appointment without ever picking up the phone. For a lot of people, that's exactly what they want — a fast, no-conversation-required way to lock in an appointment.
Because at the end of the day, most people aren't trying to have a long conversation about notary logistics. They're trying to check one thing off their list, quickly, and move on with their day.
What Happens When I'm Not Available
I can't be everywhere, and I don't pretend to be. If my schedule doesn't line up with what someone needs, I don't just leave them stuck. I have a network of fellow notaries I trust, and I'll do what I can to connect that person with someone who is available.
The goal isn't just to book my own calendar. It's to make sure people actually get help when they need it, even if that help isn't coming from me directly.
The One Real Exception: Apostille Requests
Same-day works for the vast majority of notarization requests. Where it gets more complicated is apostilles.
To get an apostille processed the same day, I need to have the documents in hand before 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. If our appointment happens after that cutoff, or falls on a weekend, the fastest turnaround I can offer is the next business day.
This is a timing issue tied to how apostille processing works, not a reflection of how quickly I can meet with you. If a same-day apostille matters to your timeline, it's worth mentioning that upfront when you book, so we can plan the appointment time accordingly.

Why People Actually Want Same-Day Service
In my experience, people don't always tell me why they need something done today. What I do notice is that convenience is almost always part of it.
Nobody wants to spend their afternoon calling notary after notary, hoping someone picks up and has an opening. People want this to be simple. They want to make one call and be done, or book online and get a confirmed appointment without ever talking to anyone.
That hospital room appointment is the clearest example of why same-day matters. But even outside of true emergencies, most people just don't want notarizing a document to become a whole ordeal. They want it handled, and they want it handled today if today is when they need it.
